Mutawintji 7 and 8 were made in winter/spring 2025 by Alex MacFarlane. They are both made from blackwood, yarran (the futed bands), wenge (the socks) and rock maple (the drawer internals. Mutawintji 8 (pictured) is a dark and stormy blackwood with pronounced figuring.

Defined by water courses over rock and the slow passage of time, Mutawintji National Park is an ancient landscape. The area is sacred to the Pantjikali, Wanyuparlku, Wilyakali, and Malyangapa people and is a vital resource for native animals. When the rains come, it’s a place of startling beauty and verdant life. The spectacular rock art left by Aboriginal people speaks of a sophisticated and timeless culture.

We had recently finished the Minderoo Side Table for a client and the fluted sections in river red gum on that design reminded me of Mutawintji. Working with William Bayliss, I set out to design a side table that was informed by this harsh, beautiful landscape.

The Mutawintji Side Table combines many of the themes and ideas that we have been exploring, yet it’s a wholly fresh approach. With this intention, the fluting speaks of watercourses and stone, the forms are organic and the materials are earthy.

The Mutawintji 8 side table in blackwood, yarran, wenge and rock maple is made without compromise. While featuring our Eyeline handles, the Mutawintji brings many of our classic design aspects to life in something new.

The first iteration of the Mutawintji Side Table (in figured blackwood with wenge detailing) won Runner Up in Australian Wood Review Magazine’s Maker of the Year Awards 2021. Beaten only by team member William Bayliss’ Bunyjul Occasional Tables.
