When John and Jan moved into their new Balgowlah townhouse, they realised that a new media unit was required. The couple did not want a “busy” piece with doors and drawers. They especially didn’t want doors that opened out into the living room, as space was at a premium. Tambour doors are a sophisticated solution for a media cabinet. The silky-smooth tambours glide to the required aperture, revealing the technology within. The tambours do not invade the living space when open. When not in use, the tambours slide back in place and conceal the electronics.
Many media units are tailored to the technology of the day and look dated as soon as the technology moves on. John and Jan believe that furniture should be timeless and serviceable. After several drawings and concepts, the solution was a tambour cabinet. Irrespective of how technology changes, this piece will always have a function. The distinctive aesthetic is especially pleasing when the tambours are closed.
