The Dancer in Myrtle, Wenge and Ebony

The Dancer won “Best in Show” at the 2006 Sydney Craft Show. In many respects, The Dancer was a “breakthrough” piece for Evan. Until that point, Evan was primarily considered a chair designer. The Dancer set the scene for many non-chair designs and the basic concepts lead to a whole family of related designs, most notably the Stork hall table. For all these reasons, The Dancer is a very collectible piece of Dunstone Design furniture.

The original commission was for a piece to occupy an awkward corner in the entry-way of a recently completed house. The Dancer required enough visual energy and presence to distract from what was, in fact, an architectural oversight. Consequently, The Dancer can command an audience in just about any space.

Much of the planning and detailing of The Dancer was done in collaboration with Swedish designer/maker Rasmus Malbert when he visited our workshop for a 6 week period. From a technical perspective, The Dancer was our first real venture into the extensive use of re-sawn veneers. From such humble beginnings we have gone on to become experts in re-sawing and in fact commissioned a dedicated, power-fed band re-saw from Italy in 2008.
