The Riverstones 1 Cabinet was commissioned by a Canberra couple who already had quite a collection of our work, including Walliga Bedside tables and a Manuka bed. They found that the earthy tones and wild figuring of river red gum perfectly complimented their extensive collection indigenous art works.
We received some stunningly figured red gum timber that came from down near Deniliquin, out along the Murray River. The figure of the red gum was so intense that the design of Riverstones 1 had to be somewhat restrained.
There are times when, for reasons of timber movement, veneered elements are the most appropriate construction method. Commercial veneers are sliced, not sawn. Its almost impossible to slice red gum veneer without losing a lot of the colour and having it very crumbly. We have a custom-built band-resaw (affectionately called “Goliath”) that allows us to saw our own veneers. Our resawn veneers are rich in colour, stable and cut from the same log as the solid timber that we use on the rest of the piece. Riverstones 1 utilises a combination of resawn veneers and solid timber. The secondary timber is rock maple.
Riverstones 1 incorporates our signature Eyeline handles.
