The Pirouette is a dainty occasional table that will brighten just about any room-scape. We don’t like heavy furniture at the best of times, but the Pirouette is so visually and physically light that it could just about float away.
I wanted a delicate occasional table design with visual “lift”. The piece had to be stable, easy to move and timeless in design. A small occasional table like this can be lost in a big space or look top-heavy if the proportions are wrong or any one element too heavy.
The Pirouette was such a sweet design to draw, but presented technical challenges to make. Simple is often the hardest to achieve. It took 6 years of on-again-off-again development to fully resolve the Pirouette. Thank goodness we persisted.
For the woodworkers among you, the challenge was getting the timber “hoop” both tight and consistent in a wide variety of timbers. We have never managed to make the hoop in red gum!
