The original Maleny cabinet was commissioned by a client at the Maleny Wood Expo in 2023. This piece is a true design collaboration between Evan Dunstone and William Bayliss. Evan introduced William to fluting with the Riverstones II cabinet, but since then William has been exploring the form with a number of his private pieces, especially his award-winning Bunyjul sculptural occasional tables. The Dunstone Design elements such as the classic Eyeline Handles are evident, but the flamboyant tapered flutes are inspired by William.
The Maleny cabinet was designed as a drinks cabinet, but it can perform in a range of roles. It is as much a sculpture as it is a cabinet. The tapered fluted drawer carcass introduces a strong sense of whimsey, as well as high craft. The restrained blackwood composition in the image creates a tension with the opulent decoration of the piece.
A true collector’s piece, the Maleny cabinet heralds a new direction in Dunstone Design furniture.
