The Tonks sideboard was a very special commission by a Canberra couple who are among our most serious collectors. The piece is made from an exceptionally figured Victorian blackwood log with wenge legs and white oak drawers. This piece represents the pinnacle of Dunstone Design craftsmanship and design.
The Tonks sideboard was more than four years in the planning. The clients, Tony and Lynne Tonks, already owned an Oxbow table with 10 matching Clearwater chairs made from the same exceptional log. The log was know as “log number 2” for the simple reason that it is only the second log of this quality ever milled by Denis Brown of Corsair Sustainable Timbers. Dr. Tonks was clear that he wanted a legacy piece to hand down over the generations.
The cabinet features signature Dunstone Design elements, such as Eyeline handles and elliptical leg sections. This is design and craftsmanship “without restraint”.
A piece like this is very driven by the extraordinary timber. Sourcing a log with this level of figure, and then designing a piece within the constraints of that timber, is the challenge. Timber with this much intensity presents additional challenges to the craftsman. All that colour and figure represents tension within the boards.
