SUMMARY:2025 Workshop Open Day and Handtool Event
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Dunstone Design Workshop Open Day is going to include a pop-up handtool event.  American hand tool expert and educator Curtis Turner will be visiting our workshop and demonstrating with Lie-Nielsen tools.  Anthony Powell from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks Australia will be in attendance with a healthy stock of tools for sale. Brisbane maker Damion Fauser will be showing a selection of his favourite hand tools and techniques\, including his pink ivory HNT Gordon moving fillister plane. Terry Gordon will be sending down a selection of HNT Gordon planes and vices for sale. Master Carver Hape Kiddle will be discussing and demonstrating the range of knives\, gouges\, files\, rasps and other hand tools that he uses every day in his practice. He will also have a selection of his carvings on exhibition in the Dunstone Design gallery. Dunstone Design will also demonstrate how we make our famous resawn veneers on our band resaw “Goliath”. \nDunstone Design will have timbers shorts\, turning blanks and resawn veneers for sale. We will have $500 “luck dip” packs of select timbers\, and factory seconds or superseded furniture designs for sale and discounted prices. \nAnthony from Lie-Nielsen Australia has generously donated a door prize for attendees. This beautiful set of Lie-Nielsen A2 Bevel Edge Bench Chisels has been reground to a primary angle of 25deg with a micro bevel of 35deg \, making them suitable for dovetail joinery in softwoods. The Japanese style toolbox features a traditional wedged lid. It’s made from Tasmanian myrtle and wenge with an oil finish. The set is valued at $497 and to be in the draw\, you must hold a valid Open Day ticket. \n \n  \n10am to 4pm Sunday 12th October. Tickets are $10 and limited to 300 people. \nThe demonstrations will run over two 3-hour cycles\, 10am to 1pm\, then 1pm to 4pm. Attendees are welcome to stay all day\, but if you allocate yourself three hours at any point in the day\, you will get a good taste of everything that’s happening. \nTickets are limited to 300 places over the full 6-hour period. Tickets are $10 each to help us cover the insurance and organizational costs. \nParking in available in the Services NSW carpark and in Aurora Pl. Disabled parking is available with prior notice. Our workshop toilets are easy to access but we do not have designated disabled toilets. \nFor more information click here

SUMMARY:Summer Hand Tools 2026
DESCRIPTION:This January\, we are offering something a bit different and a bit special. Join Evan for two weeks for Summer Hand Tools 2026 making a blackwood wall-hung cabinet using primarily hand tools. The class is limited to just 5 students. While you work on your cabinets with Evan\, Dunstone Design makers Alex MacFarlane and Owen Kirschenberg will be working on real Dunstone Design commissions. For the first time ever\, Masterclass students will see what a “normal” working day at Dunstone Design looks like. You get to be an honorary part of the team! \nDesign Opportunities:  Depending on your skill level and aesthetics\, you can adjust the complexity of the project to suit yourself. The basic cabinet is 760mm H x 480mm W x 280mm D. The door will be hung on Brusso knife hinges. Design you own panel\, door frame and handle. Add shelves or other internal options. Learn to plan a project\, select the timber\, make hand-made door pulls\, cut mitred carcass dovetails and cut the door joinery by hand using a range of high-quality hand tools. This course is open to all skill levels\, as the complexity of your cabinet can be adjusted to your ability. \nPlan ahead: Commission your own Dunstone Design work bench and we’ll have it ready for you to use on this course (optional). \nWe will be joining Alex and Owen at Smoko and lunch every day (9:30am to 10am and 1pm to 1:30pm). We will supply tea\, coffee\, fruit and snacks\, but you should bring your own lunch/food. \nClass will start daily at 8:30am and finish at 4:00pm. Alex and Owen work 7am to 5pm\, Tuesday to Friday\, so we will have Mondays to ourselves. \nWhat to Bring: Feel free to bring your own hand tools (no power tools!). We will use this opportunity to tune-up your tools and use them to the best of their capacity. If you don’t have any tools worth bringing\, don’t worry about it. \nWhat to Wear: It could be hot\, so wear practical clothes. Enclosed shoes are mandatory. \nThe total course fee is $3\,850 incl. GST. The fee includes all materials and consumables. You must have turned 18 by Jan 12th to attend this course. We require a $500 deposit at the time of booking. You will be invoiced for the balance 2 weeks out from the commencement date. The deposit is fully re-fundable up to 4 weeks prior to the course commencing. \nLots of design opportunities for your wall mounted cabinet.
