SUMMARY:Summer Hand Tools 2026
DESCRIPTION:This January\, we are offering something a bit different and a bit special. Join Evan for two weeks for Summer Hand Tools 2026 making a blackwood wall-hung cabinet using primarily hand tools. The class is limited to just 5 students. While you work on your cabinets with Evan\, Dunstone Design makers Alex MacFarlane and Owen Kirschenberg will be working on real Dunstone Design commissions. For the first time ever\, Masterclass students will see what a “normal” working day at Dunstone Design looks like. You get to be an honorary part of the team! \nDesign Opportunities:  Depending on your skill level and aesthetics\, you can adjust the complexity of the project to suit yourself. The basic cabinet is 760mm H x 480mm W x 280mm D. The door will be hung on Brusso knife hinges. Design you own panel\, door frame and handle. Add shelves or other internal options. Learn to plan a project\, select the timber\, make hand-made door pulls\, cut mitred carcass dovetails and cut the door joinery by hand using a range of high-quality hand tools. This course is open to all skill levels\, as the complexity of your cabinet can be adjusted to your ability. \nPlan ahead: Commission your own Dunstone Design work bench and we’ll have it ready for you to use on this course (optional). \nWe will be joining Alex and Owen at Smoko and lunch every day (9:30am to 10am and 1pm to 1:30pm). We will supply tea\, coffee\, fruit and snacks\, but you should bring your own lunch/food. \nClass will start daily at 8:30am and finish at 4:00pm. Alex and Owen work 7am to 5pm\, Tuesday to Friday\, so we will have Mondays to ourselves. \nWhat to Bring: Feel free to bring your own hand tools (no power tools!). We will use this opportunity to tune-up your tools and use them to the best of their capacity. If you don’t have any tools worth bringing\, don’t worry about it. \nWhat to Wear: It could be hot\, so wear practical clothes. Enclosed shoes are mandatory. \nThe total course fee is $3\,850 incl. GST. The fee includes all materials and consumables. You must have turned 18 by Jan 12th to attend this course. We require a $500 deposit at the time of booking. You will be invoiced for the balance 2 weeks out from the commencement date. The deposit is fully re-fundable up to 4 weeks prior to the course commencing. \nLots of design opportunities for your wall mounted cabinet.

SUMMARY:Comprehensive Woodworking
DESCRIPTION:We’ve programmed Comprehensive Woodworking to be a wholistic one-week over-view of the craft of woodwork. This is the core information that every woodworker needs. It’s the vital information that we teach our apprentices at the beginning of their training. \nSo many woodworkers pick up their knowledge in a piecemeal way. They learn misinformation\, pickup bad habits and follow out-of-date practices. All too often\, wood workers reach for a bad tool or struggle with a flawed piece of wood without understand what’s wrong or knowing how to improve. \nFor many\, it’s simply a lack of access from a young age. Perhaps your school didn’t teach woodwork? Perhaps you haven’t picked up a chisel in 30 years? Perhaps you were once discouraged from working with your hands? No matter! We’re here to provide you with a complete over-view of the craft and to point you in the right direction. \nMany of you’ll consider yourselves to be “good” woodworkers. You’ll think “I don’t need this course”. You’ll wait for a course that offers something exciting to make. The thing is\, you don’t know what it is that you don’t know. In a world of Youtube\, wood shows and podcasts\, there’s so much conflicting advice. Many people are trying to sell you an expensive piece of unnecessary kit. We just want you to enjoy the creative process of woodwork. \nDay One \nAll about timber \nWe share our deep love of timber. We talk about hard wood\, soft wood\, long grain\, end grain and “difficult” grain. We look at colour matching\, grain matching\, sliced and sawn veneer as well as common substrates. We experiment with figured timber\, burls and knots. We look at some of the common cabinet species\, we discuss commercial timber sizes and we talk about how to buy and store wood. We pay special attention to timber movement\, grain direction and moisture content. \nDay Two \nAll about hand tools \nWe go through all the basic hand tools and how they cut. We look at saws\, chisels\, hand planes\, marking-out tools\, scrapers\, carving tools\, sharpening and the importance of good steel. We compare Western tools with their Japanese equivalents. We discuss what to look for in a tool and which tools are the most important to invest in first. \nDay Three \nAll about hand-held electric and pneumatic tools. \nWe look at all the common woodworking hand-held power tools\, including routers\, Domino machines\, biscuit jointers\, drills\, electric planes\, track saws\, angle grinders\, jig saws\, palm sanders and circular/contractors/mitre saws. \nDay Four \nAll about machines. \nWe look at the surface planer\, thicknesser\, band saw\, table saw\, radial arm saw\, router table\, spindle moulder\, re-saw\, and linisher (sander). We discuss the importance of jigs\, machine safety and general maintenance. \nDay Five \nEverything Else \nWe look at gluing-up\, sanding\, finishing\, vacuum bags\, clamping\, steam bending and curved laminating. We also look at screws\, nails and hinges. \nWe bring all this together by designing and building a safe\, logical jig for the router table\, using all the knowledge gained during the week. \nNotes \nMorning tea and lunch included. \nStudents must be 18 years or older. \nYou do not need to bring any tools. However\, you are encouraged to bring any hand tools that you would like some advice on (such as a hand plane that needs tuning). Part of the course will be on sharpening and tuning hand tools. This is a great opportunity for you to fettle your hand tools! Please don’t bring any power tools. \nThe total course fee is $2\,695 incl. GST. We require an $300 deposit at the time of booking. You will be invoiced for the balance 2 weeks out from the commencement date. The deposit is fully re-fundable up to 4 weeks prior to the course commencing. If you are unable to attend due to illness (such as COVID 19) at the time of commencement\, we will refund the deposit or put the deposit towards a later masterclass. \n  \nHello Evan\, \nIn my haste to get away on Friday I forgot to personally thank Aditi and would be grateful if you would pass on my thanks. She has a lovely manner and amongst other things very patiently took me through the intricacies of sanding. The thought of it no longer fills me with dread. \nI would like to thank you for a very rewarding week. The class was truely comprehensive\, and I gained insight and practical knowledge about all aspects of woodworking. I admit I attended as a novice interested principally in joinery techniques- the class though has now ignited an interest in all aspects of the craft. \nWarm regards\, \nJim (January 2024 Comprehensive Woodworking student) \nHi Evan\, \nHope you are doing well. It took a while for me to think about what feedback I could give you. Also sometimes it is not worth taking holidays when you come back to a mountain of work! I was reminded to email you by seeing yet another woodworker who had taken off the tops of two fingers with a router. I really appreciated your emphasis on safety while woodworking.  \nThe topics that I found most useful were:  \n1. Structure and drying of wood\, especially the different Australian woods.  \n2. How to sharpen properly!  \n3. Correct use of hand tools\, especially planes  \n4. Hand sanding  \n5. Gluing techniques and the reasons why.  \n6. Finishing/oiling.  \n7. General principles for using a bandsaw which will be applicable to a scroll saw.  \n8. Repairing scratches in furniture As you can see I prefer hand tools\, both because I like doing things slowly and carefully and because I see serious injuries from woodworking at least once a month.  \nOur group represented a good cross section of ages\, abilities\, resources and ambitions. You did well to cater to everyone by starting with the basics and giving us the scientific reasons why wood behaves as it does. Not everything you taught was relevant for me but there was always something useful every day. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I found it very interesting and hope to put it to good use in the future.  \nRegards\, Margaret (January 2024 Comprehensive Woodworking Student) \n  \nFine tools laid out ready for the students at Comprehensive Woodwork.

We can supply you with all these\, but you will be most comfortable in equipment that you are familiar with. You will not need to bring any tools.  \nLocation \nDunstone Design Global\, 3/5 Aurora Pl\, Queanbeyan\, NSW. \nDear Evan\, \nIt’s a little over a year since I attended your Production Masterclass\, and I thought I would write and offer my thoughts on the course after having had time to reflect on it and apply\nit to my own woodworking. \nMy immediate impression after the course was that I learnt a lot and really enjoyed the experience. 12 months later I am still drawing upon what I learned and applying it in my\nown workshop. \nFor me the most valuable aspect of the course was gaining knowledge and insights which have really helped me develop my thinking from that of a maker of one-off creations\ntowards managing my own small-scale production run environment. I’ve also found that this mindset shift has had a positive effect on my work practices when working on one-off\npieces. I also came away from the course with some new woodworking skills. \nWhilst we used a production run of about 20 stools as the teaching medium I found most of the knowledge and skills I acquired were not specific to chair making but could be\neffectively applied to making multiples of almost any woodworking project. I thought the stools were a good choice for the course given they have a mix of unique\, duplicated\, and\nmirror image components and involve so many processes during their construction. I also liked that we used four different timbers and saw how their individual characteristics\nimpacted on some of the production processes. \nHaving yourself\, Alex\, and William all playing an active part in teaching us during the week really added to the experience. I found it reassuring that you each had different\napproaches to the same task on occasion and took the time to explain why. No ‘one true way’ preaching at Dunstone Design! I was also very impressed with the approach to safety\nwithin your workshop and the emphasis on the why as well as the how when it came to talking about safe work practices. \nI appreciated the chance to work with and discuss the pros and cons of so many different woodworking machines over the week. I had no prior experience with machinery such as\nthe spindle moulder and had only used much smaller versions of others like Goliath the bandsaw. The knowledge and hands-on experience I gained has already influenced my\nown machinery purchasing decisions. \nI would absolutely recommend the course to anyone wanting to expand their woodworking beyond a hobby making the occasional one-off project. \nThank you again\, Paul (NSW) \n

SUMMARY:Design & Development 2023 with Adam Rogers
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to welcome back master designer/maker Adam Rogers for Design & Development 2023. \nDesign & Development is our flagship masterclass. The course is our opportunity to give Australian woodworkers access to world class ideas and facilities. This is a rare opportunity for makers to develop personally and professionally. Design & Development takes place over two weeks in October. Week one focuses on developing a brief\, design theory\, sketching\, model making\, research and design play. Week two is spent “on the tools” in the workshop investigating form\, material\, technique\, and process. \nDesign & Development 2023 will be taught by Adam Rogers\, Evan Dunstone and William Bayliss. \nAdam Rogers is one of America’s leading designers of contemporary fine furniture. He was head designer at Thos. Moser and is now one of the principles of Square Manufacturing\, Maine. In his independent design studio\, Adam develops pieces for some of America’s leading niche retailers. \nAdam has taught product development and chair design at the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship\, Maine. He was a visiting professor at the School for American Crafts\, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Adam taught the inaugural Design & Development at our workshop in 2019. \nMy passion is for both design and craft\, an approach that transcends scale\, and the belief that design is the process of deciding what to turn a tree into\, and craft is the process of doing so – whether just once\, or several times. This craft thing is one long history of skills and ideas passed down and evolved through experience. I enjoy trying to distil lessons from the process and sharing with others – Adam Rogers. \nEvan Dunstone is fresh from his Gottstein Fellowship to Sweden\, where he studied the Swedish approach to teaching woodcraft and design. Evan visited Stenebyskolan\, Malmstens and Capellagården. He gave a paper on Australian craftsmanship and timber at the Malmstens Alumni Symposium; Woodworking Tools & Techniques – Past\, Present & Future in Stockholm. \nWilliam Bayliss is a multi-award-winning craftsman at Dunstone Design. William started as an apprentice in July of 2015 and has gone on to become the fore-most craftsman of his generation. In 2021\, he took out Overall Winner as well as Winner in the category Tables\, Chairs and Desks in Australian Wood Review’s Maker of the Year Awards with his Bunyjul Occasional Tables. \nDunstone Design has arguably the best equipped wood workshop in Australia. You will be using Martin machinery and have access to a wide range of traditional woodworking machinery. Dunstone Design Workshop manager Alex Mac Farlane will make a cameo appearance and conduct an in-depth lecture on the safe use and possibilities of the spindle moulder. \nThe course is limited to 12 participants\, so you’ll enjoy a teaching ration of 1:4. \nProfessional and aspiring professional makers grow from a chance learn\, play and collaborate in a well equipped space under the guidance of a master designer. I feel much better equipped as a designer/maker. And your hospitality and facilities are top drawer.  \nAdam — thank you. In my experience\, your knowledge and experience as a designer/maker is uncommon — you really do offer something different. Come back. -Jeremy (professional maker) \n———————————————————————————————————————————————– \nDear Evan\, \nMany thanks for sharing your wealth of experience during the Design and Development class last week. Your ability to bring together such a fine group was amazing.  The fact that the group not only collectively represented many many decades of professional and hobby furniture-making experience but also included members who have been well-recognised as exemplars in the craft was breathtaking. \nWith such a rich mixture of classmates from seasoned woodworkers\, fine furniture-makers\, and start-up business owners\, the conversations were amazing.  I have no doubt that the learnings will pay dividends for me as I make choices about what furniture to make\, how to make them\, and how to fund them.   \nDriving back from the course I reflected on how ‘design’ is such a small word covering a big world of creative endeavour.  I am so thankful that the course was led by such able tutors that you were able to shape it fluidly day by day\, adapting to the needs of each individual student.  This was so valuable in empowering me personally to begin discover my own approach to design.  As a result the course was a journey of self-discovery\, lots of creative experimentation\, and an event I am sure I will look back on as being a formative point In my developing career. \nSufficient to say\, I feel privileged to have been a member of the inaugural Dunstone Design Masterclass of 2019 and look forward to maintaining a close friendship with both you\, Adam and my class alumni.  I have little doubt that over time the woodworkers this course produces will become an important community that few serious woodworkers will not want to be part of.  Afterall\, all important work starts with great design!- Adam T (enthusiast and aspiring professional) \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————– \n“I thank you both for helping “an older person” awaken his creative side\, by showing what is possible and how to go about making things of beauty.”– Steve (enthusiast) \n“Gentlemen\, right off the top can I say that I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I personally got a lot out of the entire week and really enjoyed listening to both of your stories\, processes and experiences. Were my expectations met; yes. Did I feel like I received value for money; yes. Would I do it again; yes. Congratulations to the both of you for the vision\, hard work and commitment to the industry.” – Warwick (professional maker) \nAdam and William Bayliss sharing their love of hand tools while inspecting HNT Gordon spokeshaves.\nWarwick Jones of Fallen and Adam discuss design possibilities at the inaugural Design & Development. SUMMARY:Week 1 of Design & Development with Adam Rogers
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to welcome back master designer/maker Adam Rogers for Design & Development 2023. When we did Design & Development in 2019\, we offered a one-week and a two-week option. It was a great mix but a logistical nightmare! So many people signed on for the first week that several people missed out on the full two-week experience. \nWe are now able to offer 4 places in the first week only of Design & Development 2023. Week One focuses on developing a brief\, design theory\, sketching\, model making\, research and design play. \nWeek One is limited to 4 participants. You will be working alongside the 8 students doing the full 2-week course. \nExpectations and Abilities \nThis is not the type of course that results in a “finished piece”. You can expect to leave with a well-advanced design/concept\, drawings\, mock-ups and models. More importantly\, you will be armed with a whole new way to think about design. \nDesign & Development is suitable for enthusiasts and professionals alike. Anyone with intermediate skills upwards will gain from this class. \nTools and Items to Bring \nYou will need to bring your own PPE of dust mask\, hearing protection and eye protection. \nWe encourage you to bring drawing materials such as a large visual diary and your favourite pencils. You are welcome to bring a laptop or similar device with a drawing program if you wish. \nPlease bring whatever personal hand tools you like. You are encouraged to bring a cordless drill. Please do not bring any power tools such a routers\, angle grinders etc. \nInclusions \nThe course fees (see below) include basic drawing materials\, MDF for templates and jigs and some 50mm thick solid timber (rock maple) for experimentation. GST. We require full payment at the time of booking. Anybody who tests positive to COVID prior to the course will be offered either a credit for Design & Development 2024 or a full refund. If you are required to cancel for other reasons prior to 6th October\, we will refund you $2\,000 incl. GST. Refunds are not possible after 6th October except for COVID. Class size is limited to 12 students (4 x Week 1 and 8 x full two weeks). \nIf you wish to discuss this opportunity further prior to booking\, contact me\, Evan\, on email ev**@****************om.au or call 0401 404 275. \nWhat Students had to say about Dunstone Design Masterclasses and Design & Development 2019 with Adam Rogers \nHi Evan\, \nJust wanted to send you a quick message to thank you for all your help over the last few years. Your input has been incredibly valuable and has had a tremendous impact on my life. I would venture to guess that without your input\, I would not be supporting the family with my woodworking. \nI know you’ve got a lot going on\, but you’re always willing to make time for me\, and I really appreciate that. \nThanks\, \nL B\, New Zealand \n  \nEvan — thank you for having the foresight to bring Adam over. SUMMARY:Design & Development with Michael C. Fortune
DESCRIPTION:Canadian Master Craftsman Michael C. Fortune leads our flagship masterclass\, Design & Development\, in 2022. Design & Development encourages a clear response to a well-articulated brief through the sensitive use of material and the appropriate application of technique. This course is open to woodworking enthusiasts\, aspiring professional and established professional makers. \n“The value of a shared design and development experience in a well-equipped and supportive environment cannot be overstated. Whether it’s developing the concept for an upcoming project\, or you wish to evolve a new direction for your furniture\, the ability to see\, think and respond creatively is easier when it’s guided by experienced tutors. You’ll work alongside the other students as they explore and develop their own sense of design and problem solving skills”. Michael C. Fortune\, 2022.  \nMichael will be assisted by Evan Dunstone and multi-award winning Dunstone Design craftsman William Bayliss. The course is limited to 12 students so you’ll enjoy a teaching ration of 1:4. Techniques that Michael and the teaching team will cover include: \n\nInlay techniques\nSimple marquetry\nWorking with veneer\nThe importance of full size drawing techniques\, and what important information should be included\nJig design and construction.\nSimple shop made devices that make us more efficient\nSimple\, cheap and quick details for furniture\nSetting up and using the bandsaw\nThe history of furniture and how to understand and use it\nCutting freehand on the bandsaw with extreme accuracy\nPerspective drawing and illustrating for presentations\nClamping strategies for any shape\nWorking with endo and exo-skeletons for creating joinery for unusual shapes\nShaping wood with hand and power tools\nSix wood forming techniques\, laminating\, steambending\, vacuum forming\, kerf bending\, cutting.\nJoinery for the un-join-able\nThe safe and efficient use of the Spindle moulder\nResawn veneers\nEbonizing and bleaching wood\nPhotographing furniture\n\nThe Brief \nBring images of 3 pieces of wooden furniture that you find special. We will work through the common thread of those pieces to help you identify what you are “seeing” that pleases you. This is the first step to understanding your own aesthetic. \nArrive with a written brief for the piece that you intend to design. The emphasis should be on who/where/when the furniture is intended. The brief might be self-imposed\, or it might come from an external source such as a spouse or client. Feel free to consider any form of furniture you wish. Remember\, design is not “how something looks” but “how something responds to the brief”. SUMMARY:Design & Development 2021
DESCRIPTION:Due to the rapidly changing COVID 19 restrictions\, this course will be delayed until 2022. We will let you know when the new date is announced.\nDesign & Development 2021 is a home-grown affair this year\, with Australian master craftsman Damien Wright joining the Dunstone Design team for the first time. \nDamien is a highly thoughtful maker who believes that a craftsperson’s role is to embrace local materials and respond to local culture. Damien’s work with ancient red gum is iconic\, leading to a range of techniques and processes that address our “difficult” timbers.  Damien switches effortlessly between functional furniture and sculptural pieces. He has worked with Western trained craftspeople and collaborated extensively with indigenous craftspeople\, most notably Yolngu man Bonhula Yunupingu. Damien has been a self employed designer/maker since 1995. He supports his practice through the sale of his uncompromised contemporary fine furniture. Although he is very generous with his knowledge\, Damien hardly ever teaches in the formal sense. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to learn design from an Australian maker who is both artistically and commercially successful. \n“Design is a way of asking and solving problems. A discipline\, a tool. A powerful and essential condition of making. It has no start and no end. But it is a lonely and graceless edifice without its craft soul.  \nIt is the balance of these grand narratives that compels me to make. Through making I get to express and reflect.  \nI work to and around a brief. But I always hold something for myself. For ever trying to unite the what\, the why and the how.  \nThe future is handmade. “ – Damien Wright\, 2021 \nThe Design & Development Masterclass includes theory\, whimsy\, play\, drawing\, technique and visualization. We will be encouraging the sensitive use of material\, the appropriate application of technique and the clear response to a well-articulated brief. This course is open to woodworking enthusiasts\, aspiring professional and established professional makers. \nThe Process \nWeek One will focus on design theory\, the develop a clear brief\, how to ideate a concept through sketching\, model making and technical drawing\, as well as developing a sensitive approach to material. \nWeek Two will be “on the tools” as you prototype your design(s). Dunstone Design has one of the best-equipped wood workshops in Australia. As part of the course structure\, we will look at advanced techniques such as the use of the spindle moulder\, curved laminations\, re-sawn veneering\, free-hand shaping and much\, much more. \nDamien and I will be supported by multi-award-winning Dunstone Design craftsman William Bayliss. The class will be limited to 12 students\, so you will enjoy a teacher/student ratio of 1 to 4. \nBring images of 3 pieces of wooden furniture that you find special. \nAn example of a helpful brief is “I intend to design an easy chair for a contemporary apartment owned by a professional couple in their late thirties/early forties.” \nAn example of an unhelpful brief is “I intend to design a cabinet in white oak with through-wedged-tenons and an Art Deco marquetry panel.” \nFeel free to consider any form of furniture you wish. Remember\, design is not “how something looks” but “how something responds to the brief”. \nIdeation \nThere are many ways to develop an idea; sketching\, technical drawing\, modeling and prototyping are a few examples. No two designers approach this problem the same way. Damien and I will lead you through all the possibilities. It’s fundamentally important that you develop your own responsive and creative strategy towards design. All abrasives and consumables such as glue and finish are included. \nMorning tea\, lunch\, snacks and bottled water are included. \nTimber \nA limited range of fine cabinet timbers are available for purchase from Dunstone Design. Monaro Timbers (a local timber merchant) is only 15 mins away. \nExpectations \nThis is not the type of course that results in a “finished piece”. You can expect to leave with a well-advanced design/concept and perhaps some jigs\, templates\, drawings\, mock-ups or models. \nThursday Night Dinner \nOn the night of Thursday 11th November\, we will have a group dinner at a local restaurant (TBA). The price of this event is not included in the course fees. \nTerms and Conditions \nThe total cost of Design & Development is $4\,500 incl. GST. A fully refundable deposit of $100 incl. GST is payable on booking. Class size is limited to 12 students. \nYou will receive an invoice from Dunstone Design via email for the balance of your fees 10 days out from the commencement date (payment via EFT). \nWe are all at the mercy of COVID 19 restrictions. If you are unable to travel to NSW for the course due to COVID restrictions\, you will receive a full refund of your deposit. If we need to postpone or cancel the course due to COVID restrictions\, you will receive a full refund. \nIf you wish to discuss this opportunity further prior to booking\, contact me\, Evan\, on email ev**@****************om.au or call 0401 404 275. \nLearn more about Design & Development. \nCabinet by Damien Wright
