Linda’s Display Cabinet was commissioned in brush box, Australian ebony and rock maple with our signature Arch handles in buttress-figured blackwood. The design was inspired by Mandy’s Display Cabinet but features inlays and more changes of level.
We don’t normally use a lot of decoration for the sake of decoration, but these clients had quite a collection of Art Deco figurines as well as carved craft items, including a magnificent walking stick in PNG ebony with mother of pearl inlay. The decoration seemed appropriate.
An unusual feature of this piece was the use of Australian ebony (Diospyros humilis). Evan had bought some of this rare timber from a friend at a wood show. He realised that this was the perfect opportunity to put it to good use.
We don’t normally use brush box as a primary timber. Brush box is really a flooring or panelling timber. It is not particularly stable and can present the maker with all sorts of problems in a fine furniture context. We used it on this piece only because it was so important to the client.
