The brief; A Canberra couple had a beautiful old house in the historic Canberra suburb of Red Hill. Their living room had a disused fireplace that was at odds with the rest of the room; they asked Evan if he could do anything with it. Evan’s concept was to create a surround that gave the illusion of radiating heat. Central heating may be efficient, but who doesn’t love an open fire? Evan designed a piece that utilised slip matched re-sawn figured Otway blackwood.

The fireplace surround was crafted by Rolf Barfoed and is one of his finest pieces. The fit is perfect and the effect the fireplace surround has on the room is remarkable. On a cold Canberra winter’s night, the illusion of radiating heat coming off this piece is sublime.
“I can honestly say that this was one of the most satisfying commissions of all time; it was such an un-expected brief. Great clients, a challenging design and Rolf pulled out all the stops.” – Evan Dunstone
